Canon’s Bubble Jet Printer BJ-10v: The 13-Year Journey from Basic Research to Product

Canon developed a new printing method, called Bubble Jet, after much effort. It started with a small research group of five chemistry researchers in 1977 that grew to more than 200 in 1990. These project members moved from Meguro (1977–1979), Atsugi (1979–1983), Hiratsuka (1983–1989) to Tamagawa (1989-present). All these locations are in the southern Tokyo metropolitan area. More importantly, with each relocation all of the researchers moved together. This ‘man transfer’ was necessary because the development of the technology required the integration of various disciplines, notably physics, chemistry, electrical, mechanical, and simulation engineering. Co-location of the engineers and researchers was crucial for exchanging technical knowledge, suggesting new methods to overcome problems, and experimenting and improving persistently. All the major technological barriers were solved by combining these technical fields.
